How to have more and better friends
1. To have a friend we must be a friend. So, start by considering the type of friend you are to others. Ask yourself, are you kind, loyal, warm, understanding, sensitive, forgiving, helpful, reliable and so on?
2. Think about what you want in a friend. What kinds of traits are important to you?
3. Create opportunities to get to know others better. For example, go to parties and social events (and when you are there introduce yourself to others); invite others over to your house, or out to the cinema with you.
4. Initially, stick to safe superficial topics. However, your friendships will never be meaningful if they stay at that level. Hence, ask others about their plans for the future, their likes and dislikes, their views on different subjects, and so on. At the same time, be open and share more about yourself as well.
5. Focus on positives, and building others up. We all have flaws so try to overlook and ignore those wherever possible. Also, don’t be negative, critical, or complain all the time.
6. Follow up on friendships. Don’t wait months before contacting someone again.
7. Be there for others when they are feeling down or when things are tough. Focus on being sensitive, caring and understanding.
8. Notice, and congratulate others for their successes. Be genuinely pleased for them.
