Why so serious Kocoum?

2 comments:

  1. That's most likely part of his nature. And I like him that way 'cuz I'm also like that.

It sickens me that there are people who hate Kocoum for being who he is. Shame on them. They just don't appreciate him like I do.

Unlike Kocoum's haters, I find him rather interesting. I mean, who wants a character who wants to be with a person who spends all of his or her time goofing around like there's no tomorrow? Pocahontas seems to fit that description.

Besides, people who are serious, responsible, intelligent, and mature are my kinds of people as I can relate to them.

    1. First I want to Thank you for writing this!
It's a valid argument about Kocoum - he is not entirely appreciates so i think i'll share my interpretation of his character and Pocahontas :)

Kocoum was to marry Pocahontas and become the next Powhatan. His seriousness was probably derived from the time and experience as a warrior. The movie presents many characteristics from him such as loyalty, bravery, courage, leadership, etc.

Pocahontas friend Nakoma pointed out Kocoum was handsome which means he was attractive in the tribe. Because Nakoma respected (and also had a crush on) Kocoum she told him about John Smith. Now if you reflect back onto the movie Kocoum got madly jealous when he saw John kiss Pocahontas and wanted to kill John Smith, resulting in him being killed by this other guy. You can draw parallel with this to Gaston from Beauty and The Beast except that Kocoum cared about Pocahontas and her honour and for who she was and not just her looks. Proof? He went to Powhatan and asked for Pocahontas hand.

Pocahontas is a free-spirited person. Her name means "Little Mischief" so she has the goofiness in her. However the movie portraits her with wisdom beyond her years. She is also very spiritually grown since she was shaman-like powers; her communication with spirits of nature (Grandmother Willow) and understand unknown languages. She is driven by justice and kindness and she loves adventures. So i think you are being harsh on her.

Now if you contrast her personality with Kocoum it's as different as fire and water.

I want to add that there are so many dimensions to every person you meet. That they are responsible, intelligent and mature - however seriousness isn't always necessary if you understand what i mean? The seriousness is important to the fact where authenticity comes to play and serious cases however when there is a union to be made such as Kocoum and Pocahontas it just would be a good-match.

Hope this makes you rethink about these two characters and once again thank you for commenting ! :)
